Papr Work: a Claude Cowork alternative that works with any model

Claude Cowork is good at handing off a task and getting a finished file back. It needs a paid Claude plan, it only runs Claude, and every task uses up part of your plan's usage.

Papr Work is a desktop agent for Mac and Windows that runs on the AI you already pay for: a ChatGPT or Claude subscription, API keys, or a free local model. The bigger difference is what happens to work you do more than once. Papr Work turns it into an app or a scheduled job you can run again, instead of a prompt you send again.

Repeat work becomes an app

Ask Cowork for a weekly pipeline report and it does the work well. Next week you ask again, or set a scheduled task, and Claude works through it from the start again, using your plan's usage each time.

Ask Papr Work and it builds a small app: a script that pulls the data, a database that keeps the history, and a screen to look at it, on a schedule. Next week the script runs. You can open the app, change a filter, or ask the agent to add a column. A supply-chain quality company uses it this way to score its customer success team's skills and balance workload across the team. Another customer runs an outreach app for its sales development reps, and a revenue consultancy turned its manual client audits into a scheduled pipeline.

Use the AI you already pay for

If you have ChatGPT Plus or Pro, or Claude Pro or Max, sign in with it and Papr Work uses that subscription. For Gemini or other models, add an API key. If you don't want to pay for a model at all, Papr Work can install Ollama and a Qwen model for you and run everything on your computer. That works well for simpler tasks; for long, multi-step work a frontier model is still noticeably better.

What Papr charges for

Nothing that runs on your own computer. Chats, apps and scheduled jobs that run locally are free and unlimited on every plan. Plan limits only apply to the cloud: jobs that run while your computer is off, shared apps hosted online, and memory stored in the cloud. The Cloud plan is $20/month.

It remembers your work

Papr Work runs on Papr's memory layer, so what you told it about your accounts, your team and your past projects is there in the next chat, and in the apps and jobs it builds.

Where Cowork is ahead

Cowork is in the Claude app, so there is nothing new to install or get approved. It now runs scheduled tasks in Anthropic's cloud and has its own browser. On Team and Enterprise plans it comes with admin controls and connectors for Microsoft 365, Slack, Google Workspace and Zoom. If your company is on Claude already and you mostly need one-off help with documents and research, it is the simpler choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Papr Work free?

The app is free and so is everything it runs on your own computer: chat, apps and scheduled jobs, with no run limits. The AI model is the part that costs money. You can sign in with a ChatGPT (Plus or Pro) or Claude (Pro or Max) subscription you already have, add API keys, or run a local model through Ollama for free. Plan limits only apply to cloud features, like jobs that keep running while your computer is off. Paid plans start at $20/month.

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. As of September 2026 Cowork is only on paid Claude plans: Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed yearly), Max, Team and Enterprise. It is not on the free Claude plan.

Does Papr Work run on Windows?

Yes. There are Windows and Mac versions.

Can I use Claude in Papr Work?

Yes. Sign in with your Claude Pro or Max subscription, or add an Anthropic API key. You can also use GPT, Gemini or a local model, and switch between them in the same workspace.

Is there an open-source Claude Cowork alternative?

Open Cowork and Eigent are open-source projects you can self-host. Papr Work is not open source, but it is free to use locally, and Papr's memory SDKs are open source on GitHub.

When is Claude Cowork the better choice?

If your company is already on Claude Team or Enterprise, uses Microsoft 365 or Slack connectors heavily, and mostly needs one-off help with documents and research, Cowork is already in the tool you pay for.
